Fish oil (Cod liver oil), Flaxseed oil, Evening Primrose oil
Your brain and spinal cord's protective myelin is made up of 75% fat and this is why it is so important to get enough of the 'good oils' (EFAs or Essential Fatty Acids) into your system. A diet low in saturated fats is preferable. You are trying to get a balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6. That is where the oils come in.
Fish oils contain high levels of Omega 3 and help to reduce the inflammatory response of your immune system. It helps with the production of myelin and regulates the functions of the Nervous System. Omega 3 contains two Essential Fatty Acids (DHA, EPA) which are essential in fighting and preventing physical and mental disease.
Cod liver oil is not the horrible tasting thing from your childhood anymore. It's improved dramatically! Try it again and see for yourself. There are many purified products available. Cod liver oil is an excellent source of Vitamin D, A and Omega 3.
When choosing your fish oil supplement, look for high levels of EPA and DHA (these are Omega 3 EFAs).
Using a supplement can be better than eating fish because you can be certain of the levels of contaminants in the oil. Eating fish three times a week is still recommended, just be aware of the toxins and heavy metals that may be in the fish.
Oily fish such as sardines, tuna, salmon, mackerel and herring are best.
Flaxseed oil is also known as linseed oil and is a good choice if you are a vegetarian. It contains a balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 (60:20) which is necessary for myelin production and normal function of the Nervous System.
Evening Primrose oil (or Borage oil)
Both Evening Primrose oil and Borage oil are excellent sources of Essential Fatty Acids. They are high in Omega 6 (Linoleic acid and GLA) and help to regulate the immune system. Omega 6 has anti-viral properties too.
In order for Evening Primrose or Borage oil to be the most effective, it must be taken in conjunction with Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc and magnesium.
